About 10 years ago I bought my first juicer and started juicing. Earlier that year I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Also, I had progressively gained about 40 lbs since my youngest daughter was born. Plus, I felt like crap pretty much most of the time. Here is my story.
Why I started juicing….
I knew I needed to start taking better care of myself and something drastic had to change. So, I bought my first juicer and started juicing (not really knowing what I was doing).
Juicing was the trend at that time. In the early 2010s, documentaries like Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead (Joe Cross), Forks Over Knives, and Super Juice Me (Jason Vale) inspired me to take on juicing AND eat more plants. This began my health journey of eating real food and using food as medicine. I highly suggest checking these sources out, if you have not.
If you have read about me you might know that I have not always love to cook. In fact, at this time I hated to cook. But, I thought, “Hey I can do this juicing thing … it is NOT cooking, I can handle that!”
After about a year of juicing off and on, I did finally lose that 40 lbs and started to feel a little better. But living on juice was not sustainable for me and my health. I started to crave chewing real food.
Everything in Moderation
Then I started to cave into my cravings and found my self juicing in order to eat the highly processed and fast food I used to eat, without guilt. But, I could not fool my body into believing this was healthy and over time my health started to fail again.
Within a couple years I gained those 40 lbs back, and then some. I had numerous MS flares and chronic migraines. Also, I was diagnosed with several other chronic conditions like osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and pre-diabetes to name a few. I felt like crap again ….
“Juicing is the new cooking.”Amie Green
Fast forward to today: I still juice! But, I have found if I have one juice a day, on most days, I am better able to maintain my health. Juicing daily just works for me! I like to add more fiber to my juices, so I blend it with avocado or banana.
Drinking fresh juice makes me feel good and is such an easy fast way to put whole plant nutrition in my body. So, I have decided, for me (someone who hated to cook), juicing is the new cooking.
If you juice or want to juice please check out some of my favorite easy juice recipes and tips. If you do not have have a juicer I suggest you invest in one, and of course, use it on a regular basis (so it pays for itself)!
For me, learning to juice was my first step to learning to love to cook.
